Tummy-Happy Apple & Prune Purée
A sweet and gentle purée of apples and prunes, perfect for helping little ones with constipation. This recipe is packed with fiber and tastes delicious!
Ingredients
- 4 dried prunes, pitted
- 1 apple, peeled, cored, and diced
- ½ cup water (plus more as needed)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Prunes. Place the pitted prunes in a small bowl.
Step 2: Soak the Prunes. Pour hot water over the prunes until they are submerged. Let them soak for 5-10 minutes to soften.
Step 3: Combine Ingredients (Alternative Method). Alternatively, you can place the prunes and diced apple pieces in a small saucepan.
Step 4: Add Water (Alternative Method). Add ½ cup of water to the saucepan with the prunes and apples.
Step 5: Cook the Fruit. If using the saucepan method, bring the water to a simmer over medium heat.
Step 6: Simmer Until Soft. Simmer the prunes and apples for about 5 minutes, or until the prunes are plump and the apples are soft.
Step 7: Combine Ingredients (Soaked Prunes Method). If you soaked the prunes separately, lightly cook the diced apples with a few tablespoons of water in a microwave or on the stovetop until soft (about 3-4 minutes). Then combine with the soaked prunes.
Step 8: Transfer to Blender. Carefully transfer the softened prunes and apples (and any cooking water) to a blender.
Step 9: Purée Until Smooth. Blend the ingredients until completely smooth. Add a tablespoon or two of the cooking water if needed to achieve a smooth consistency.
Step 10: Check for Texture. If any small pieces of prune skin remain, push the purée through a fine-mesh sieve to remove them.
Step 11: Serve Immediately. Offer a small amount of the purée to your baby. It can be served on its own or mixed into cereal or yogurt.
Step 12: Store Leftovers. Refrigerate the remaining purée in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Step 13: Freeze for Later. For longer storage, freeze the purée in small portions (ice cube trays work well) for easy thawing.
Step 14: Thaw Frozen Portions. When ready to use, thaw a frozen portion in the refrigerator or microwave.
Safety Notes
- Adult supervision required during cooking and blending.
- Ensure purée is completely smooth to avoid choking hazards.
