Apple Purée (Stewed Apple)
A simple and naturally sweet apple purée perfect for babies, made with cooked apples for easy digestion. A great source of vitamin C and fiber.
Ingredients
- 2 medium apples (e.g., Gala, Fuji, or Golden Delicious)
- 1/2 cup water
Instructions
Wash the apples thoroughly under cool running water to remove any dirt or debris.
Using a vegetable peeler, carefully peel the skin off of both apples. Peeling ensures a smooth texture for baby food.
Cut the peeled apples in half from top to bottom.
Using a small spoon or knife, remove the core and any seeds from each apple half. Discard the core.
Chop the apple halves into small, uniform chunks. Smaller pieces will cook more evenly and quickly.
Place the chopped apple pieces into a small saucepan.
Pour 1/2 cup of water over the apple pieces in the saucepan.
Place the saucepan over medium heat on the stovetop.
Bring the water to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low.
Cover the saucepan with a lid and simmer for 8-10 minutes, or until the apples are very soft and easily broken apart with a fork.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the apples cool slightly for a few minutes.
Transfer the softened apples and any remaining liquid from the saucepan to a blender or food processor. Alternatively, use an immersion blender directly in the saucepan.
Blend the apples until completely smooth and creamy. If needed, add a tablespoon of breast milk or formula to achieve a smoother consistency.
Allow the apple purée to cool completely before serving. Serve at room temperature or slightly warm (not hot).
To store, transfer the cooled purée into an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. For longer storage, pour into ice cube trays and freeze. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a freezer bag for up to 1 month.
Safety Notes
- Adult supervision required for all steps, especially when using knives, the stove, and blenders.
- Ensure the purée is completely cooled before serving to prevent burns.
- Always test the temperature of the purée before feeding it to your baby.
- Introduce new foods one at a time to monitor for any allergic reactions.
