Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Fingers
Soft and nutritious baked oatmeal bars perfect for babies to hold and self-feed. Made with oats, apples, and cinnamon for a wholesome and delicious breakfast or snack.
Ingredients
- 1 cup quick oats (or old-fashioned oats, lightly pulsed)
- 1 cup milk (breast milk, formula, or whole cow's milk)
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce (or 1 small apple, grated)
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon melted butter or oil (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease or line an 8x8 inch baking dish with parchment paper. This prevents sticking and makes removal easy.
In a medium bowl, combine the quick oats, milk, applesauce (or grated apple), egg, cinnamon, and melted butter or oil (if using).
Stir all ingredients together thoroughly until well combined. Ensure no dry oats remain at the bottom of the bowl.
Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes. This allows the oats to absorb the liquid, resulting in a softer texture.
Pour the oat mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spread evenly with a spatula to ensure uniform thickness.
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the center is set.
To check for doneness, gently touch the center of the baked oatmeal. It should feel firm to the touch, not jiggly.
Remove the baking dish from the oven and let it cool completely in the pan. Cooling helps the oatmeal fingers solidify.
Once cooled, carefully lift the baked oatmeal from the pan using the parchment paper overhang (if used).
Using a sharp knife, cut the baked oatmeal into finger-sized strips or bars, approximately 1 inch wide and 3-4 inches long.
Serve the oatmeal fingers to your baby. Ensure the pieces are small enough for them to manage safely.
Store any leftover oatmeal fingers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
Safety Notes
- Adult supervision required during preparation and feeding.
- Ensure the oatmeal fingers are cooled completely before serving to prevent burns.
- Cut the oatmeal fingers into appropriate sizes to avoid choking hazards.
- Check for any allergic reactions when introducing new foods to your baby.
