Baby's First Fried Rice (Egg & Veggie)
A super soft and flavorful fried rice designed for babies, packed with finely diced veggies and scrambled egg, seasoned with sesame oil instead of salt.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup cooked rice (white or brown, well-cooked and soft)
- 1 teaspoon finely chopped carrot
- 1 teaspoon finely chopped peas (or use whole if very soft)
- 1 teaspoon finely chopped green onion (optional)
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil (or olive oil)
- A tiny pinch of ginger powder or grated ginger (optional)
Instructions
Prepare the vegetables: Finely dice the carrot, peas (if using frozen, thaw first), and green onion. The smaller the pieces, the easier it will be for your baby to eat.
Prepare the egg: In a small bowl, beat the egg thoroughly until the yolk and white are fully combined.
Heat the pan: Heat half a teaspoon of sesame oil (or olive oil) in a small, non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat.
Scramble the egg: Pour the beaten egg into the heated pan. Gently scramble it, using a spatula to break it into very small curds as it cooks. This ensures easy chewing for your baby.
Remove the egg: Once the egg is fully cooked and broken into small pieces, remove it from the pan and set aside in a bowl.
Sauté the vegetables: Add the remaining half teaspoon of oil to the same pan.
Add the vegetables: Add the finely chopped carrot, peas, and green onion (if using) to the pan.
Sauté until soft: Sauté the vegetables for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the carrot is slightly softened. If using ginger, add it during the last 30 seconds of sautéing to release its aroma.
Add the rice: Add the cooked rice to the pan with the sautéed vegetables.
Stir-fry the rice: Stir-fry the rice with the vegetables for another 2 minutes, using the spatula to gently break up any clumps of rice. Ensure everything is well combined.
Incorporate the egg: Add the scrambled egg back into the pan with the rice and vegetables.
Combine thoroughly: Toss everything together to combine evenly, ensuring the egg is distributed throughout the rice and vegetables. Heat through.
Cool and serve: Remove the fried rice from the pan and let it cool to a safe temperature before serving to your baby. Check the temperature carefully.
Check texture: The fried rice should be moist and soft, with no large pieces that could be a choking hazard. If it seems dry, add a sprinkle of water and stir.
Serving suggestion: Offer small spoonfuls of the cooled fried rice to your baby. You can also let them try to pick up small clumps with their fingers if they are able.
Safety Notes
- Adult supervision required during cooking and feeding.
- Ensure vegetables are finely diced to prevent choking.
